Lately we have seen a lot of children steal bread and watches. They got a very large fine. Their names are Albert Turner, Julia Oagothorp, Dennis Fairy, David Day and Mary Ann barber. All of them were sent to the Reform School. The children are going to stay on the school for four or five years.
The children’s behavior often causes anger among the adults. Maybe they think the children do it because they want to annoy, but a lot of these young children have goods reasons. Many of them are very poor and have not much food, clothes and money. They often steal food because they are hungry.
The children’s parents are often very poor too and maybe they send out their children to steal supplies. They rather want their children to take the blame for their actions..
In this case the children are sent to Reform Schools, and hard labor for a few months. If the crime is bigger they can get some days in prison. In prison there are a lot of different people, it doesn’t matter if they have stolen bread or killed a person.
Some of the thieves can be sent away from their families for four or more years. Many never return.
In some cases the children run away from the prison or the Reform schools. Then they often live on the street or they find a place with other children. If the police catches them when they, lets say steal a bread, they often send them to orphanage and sometimes the police want to sell the children for money. If a chimneysweeper came along and saw a poster about a child who is for sale he could buy one or two of the children and set them to work as a chimneysweeper. The good thing about having children working under you is that they are cheaper and you can tell them exactly what to do. They won’t fight back or complain on your skills in the job. They just hope to survive the day without many breaks, food and nourishment. It can happen that children who overwork dies, and if they die, the workers just buys another child.
The crime rate is going up
